3 days Climbing Mount Meru

Day 1: The climb to Mount Meru begins early in the morning. You’ll meet your guides and fellow climbers at the base camp, usually located near the Arusha National Park. After a brief orientation and equipment check, you’ll start the trek through the lush rainforest. The trail is well-marked, and you might spot some wildlife along the way, including colobus monkeys and various bird species. The first day’s hike is relatively moderate, and you’ll cover a considerable distance before reaching the Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll spend the night. At the hut, you can rest, enjoy a warm meal, and prepare for the challenges ahead.

Day 2: On the second day, you’ll wake up early for a hearty breakfast and continue your ascent. The terrain begins to change as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and more challenging as you climb higher. Throughout the day, you’ll pass several viewpoints that offer breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape and, weather permitting, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Your efforts will be rewarded when you arrive at the Saddle Hut, situated between the Little Meru and Meru peaks. This will be your camp for the second night.

Day 3: The final ascent to the summit of Mount Meru begins very early in the morning, typically around midnight. This is to ensure you reach the summit at sunrise, when the weather is usually clearer and the views are spectacular. The climb is challenging, involving some steep and rocky sections, but your experienced guides will be there to support and assist you. As you near the summit, the terrain becomes more rugged, and you’ll have to navigate some scrambling sections. But as you stand on the top of Socialist Peak, at an elevation of about 4,562 meters (14,968 feet), the sense of accomplishment and the panoramic views will make it all worthwhile. After spending some time at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to the Saddle Hut for a well-deserved rest. Later in the day, you’ll continue the descent back to the Miriakamba Hut, then to the base camp. The descent is less strenuous, but you’ll still need to take your time and watch your step. Upon reaching the base camp, you’ll say goodbye to your guides and fellow climbers, and perhaps celebrate your achievement with a group photo. From there, you’ll head back to Arusha or your next destination, cherishing the memories of your unforgettable adventure on Mount Meru.
